Visit the de Young For their month-long residency, Ferris Plock and Kelly Tunstall investigate the spaces between the “comfort bubbles” that we all live in, especially within the context of an urban environment. We each have daily rituals and routines that contribute to our identities, and sense of relative normalcy and comfort. What happens when our bubbles collide, join with, or alter other people’s bubbles? What remains, and what is transferred through our continual interactions? What happens in public places where we all converge? Plock and Tunstall create a large collaborative painting depicting these concepts, and museum visitors are invited to add signage and structures to a constantly evolving cardboard cityscape, resulting in a large-scale collaborative vision of layered routines. The Artist Studio program is made possible with major support from the Institute of Museum and Library Services’ Museums for America program.
